When to start fireworks training (and why now)

Sound training takes several weeks, so the guide's New Year countdown starts 6–8 weeks before New Year's Eve – for most of us that is late October or early November. You start with firework sounds played so quietly that your dog stays relaxed, keep sessions to 3–5 minutes and only turn the volume up after three relaxed sessions in a row.

The countdown then adds a step at 4 weeks, 2 weeks and 1 week before, so nothing is left for the last few days.

A dog advent calendar without a pile of treats

The advent calendar has 24 short activities, one for each day until Christmas Eve: sniff hunts, small tricks, brain games and calm evenings. Most take 5–15 minutes and use things you already have at home. Rewards can come from your dog's normal daily food, so December doesn't add up to a pile of extra treats.

Dog-safe Christmas checklist

An overview of Christmas food your dog shouldn't have, a checklist for the tree, decorations and plants, and tips for when visitors come.

New Year's Eve: the evening plan

How to build a den your dog chooses to go to, a long calm walk on the day before, and a timetable for New Year's Eve itself. Fill-in pages – your dog's New Year plan, a dog-sitter sheet, a sound-training log and a fireworks diary – help you keep track.

FAQ

When should I start fireworks training with my dog?

Ideally 6–8 weeks before New Year, so late October or early November. Short daily sessions at a very low volume work better than a crash course in the last week.

Is this an advent calendar with treats?

No. It's 24 short activities (sniff games, mini tricks, calm walks). Rewards can come from your dog's daily food, so you don't stack up extra calories in December.

What if my dog panics badly at fireworks?

The plan covers calm-down routines and a safe den at home. For strong fear, talk to your vet before New Year.

What format is it?

A printable PDF you download straight after purchase. Nothing is shipped.
