βOne dog year equals seven human yearsβ is a myth. Dogs mature quickly in their first two years and age more slowly after that. This calculator uses the widely cited rule of thumb from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The result is a rough estimate, not a health assessment.

FAQ
Is one dog year equal to seven human years?
No. According to the AVMA, the first year of a medium-sized dog's life equals about 15 human years, the second year about 9, and each year after that about 4β5 human years. It is an estimate.
When is a dog considered a senior?
The AVMA says small dogs are generally considered senior at around 7 years, while larger breeds are often considered senior at 5 to 6 years of age.
Why does size matter?
Larger breeds tend to have shorter lifespans than small ones and age faster. That is why the calculator gives slightly different numbers for small and larger dogs. Your vet can assess your own dog.
