Indoor games for dark, rainy evenings

When walks are short and wet, short brain games use your dog's nose and head with things you already have: treat scatter on a rug, which hand?, the cup game, a towel roll, a muffin tin puzzle, a paper bag surprise, a blanket tunnel, nose touch and backing up in a hallway. Keep it short: three to ten minutes is plenty, and stop while your dog still wants more.

Week 1: nose games

Week 1 starts with easy sniffing games (★) such as treat scatter and which hand?, then builds to the cup game, towel roll, box search and a scent trail. Success on the easy games builds motivation before you make it harder.

Week 2: problem-solving games

Week 2 brings puzzles with a muffin tin, paper bag, bottle spinner, egg box, blanket tunnel and similar setups. Your dog works out how to get to the food or toy with nose and paws, still in short sessions.

Week 3: body awareness and focus

Week 3 practises body awareness and calm focus: nose touch, slow pole walks, paws up, backing up, wait for it, look at me and a slow spin. Play on non-slip ground and avoid jumping and sharp turns, especially for puppies and older dogs.

Week 4: advanced games and teamwork

Week 4 adds advanced games and teamwork, such as naming a toy, tidy up, find the person and a shell game outdoors when the weather allows. Tick each game in the tracker and note which ones your dog likes best.

A simple weekly routine (and what to do if your dog gets over-excited)

A simple day can be a five-minute sniff game around the walk, a five-minute problem-solving game in the afternoon and a three-to-five-minute calm focus game in the evening, followed by a chew and rest. Give your dog at least one easy, relaxed day each week. If your dog gets wound up by brain games, choose calmer ★ games, keep sessions shorter and end with a chew.

Printable tracker, planner and session log

The PDF includes a 30-game tracker, a weekly planner, a session log and a page for your dog's favourites, so you can see progress without guessing.

FAQ

How can I tire out my dog indoors?

Short brain games: sniffing, problem-solving and focus games use your dog's nose and head, not just its legs. The guide has 30 games with towels, cups, boxes, paper and treats, from very easy (★) to advanced (★★★). Brain games are an addition to walks, not a replacement.

How long should a brain game session be?

3–10 minutes is plenty. A simple day: a 5-minute sniff game around the walk, a 5-minute problem-solving game in the afternoon and a 3–5-minute calm focus game in the evening, followed by a chew and rest. Give your dog at least one easy, relaxed day each week.

Are the games OK for puppies and older dogs?

Start with the ★ games, play on non-slip ground and avoid jumping and sharp turns, especially for puppies and older dogs. If your dog has health problems or pain, talk to your vet before starting new activities.
