Before your puppy comes home: shopping list and puppy-proofing

Have the essentials ready: crate or pen, soft washable bed (two sets help), sturdy bowls, the food your puppy already eats, soft treats, light collar or harness with ID, short lead, safe chew toys, poo bags, enzyme cleaner and old towels.

Puppy-proof at puppy height: hide cables, clear shoes and remotes, lock away chemicals and medicines, and block stairs and balconies. Decide which rooms your puppy can use at first and start small.

Your puppy's first week at home

Day 1 a calm arrival (straight to the toilet spot, explore one or two rooms, a nap in the crate or pen with the door open). Day 2 the first night (sleeping place near you, one boring night-time toilet trip). Day 3 toilet rhythm (after waking, eating, play and every 1โ€“2 hours while awake). Day 4 rest and sleep. Day 5 regular meals. Day 6 staying calm about accidents (enzyme cleaner, never scold). Day 7 look back and adjust. Each day has one focus and 2โ€“3 small tasks that take minutes.

Week 2: routines, name, crate and handling

Week 2 builds a steady daily rhythm, name response, calm crate time and gentle handling of paws, ears and mouth, still in short, positive sessions.

Week 3: socialisation, short walks and bite inhibition

Week 3 works through a socialisation checklist (people, sounds, surfaces and places) at a pace your puppy is comfortable with, adds short walks when your vet says it is safe, and practises soft mouths with toys and redirection.

Week 4: sit, come, loose leash and short alone time

Week 4 introduces sit, come, loose-leash steps and very short alone-time practice that you can continue with the home-alone guide. Keep sessions short and end while your puppy still wants more.

A new puppy in the dark, wet months

Toilet trips still follow the same rhythm, rain or shine, and the night trip stays boring: low light, no play, straight back to bed. The socialisation checklist includes wind and rain, wet ground and puddles, snow, and people with hoods and umbrellas, so autumn and winter give you plenty to practise, at a pace your puppy is comfortable with. Ask your vet when your puppy can safely go to public places and meet other dogs.

Printable trackers

A daily routine template, house-training log, socialisation checklist and vet & vaccination note pages help you see patterns after a week without guessing.

FAQ

What should I do on my puppy's first night?

Put the crate or bed near you so your puppy can hear and smell you. Plan one night-time toilet trip (more for very young puppies) and keep it boring: no play, low light, straight back to bed. During the day, toss a treat or two into the crate and let your puppy walk in and out freely.

How often should I take my puppy out to the toilet?

After waking, after eating, after play and every 1โ€“2 hours while awake. Say your toilet word quietly while your puppy goes and reward right away, outside. The house-training log helps you see the pattern after a week.

When can my puppy meet other dogs?

Ask your vet when your puppy can safely go to public places and meet other dogs. Until then you can carry your puppy, use your own garden and invite healthy, vaccinated dogs you know well.
